From a simple idea to an award-winning paddle and river cruise centre, CK SUP & Paddle has been my passion project, built on a love for the water and a desire to share unforgettable experiences with others. Here’s how it all began.
From Channel Kayaks to CK SUP & Paddle
Back in 2014, I founded Channel Kayaks driven by my love for the outdoors, with a focus on selling sit-on-top kayaks. I realised that people weren’t just interested in buying kayaks—they wanted to experience them. My “try before you buy” model became so popular that it completely changed my focus. Before I knew it, I was hosting paddle events at stunning locations like Castle Howard and Harewood House, even making an appearance on Made in Leeds.
Then came a game-changing moment. The National Trust invited me to run paddling experiences at their properties, and around the same time, a friend introduced me to the Katakanu—a six-seater, twin-hulled craft that was perfect for group adventures. Stable, inclusive, and easy to control, it quickly became the backbone of my guided tours.
Another unexpected opportunity arose at Tredegar House in Newport, where a guest suggested I set up in Bristol. I spent a season there running guided Katakanu tours and earning my BSUPA Level 1 Paddleboard Instructor certification. But the adventure was just beginning.
Finding a Home in Bath
After my time in Bristol, I had the chance to transform a neglected patch of land at The Boathouse, Bath, into something special. What was once a neglected or unused space became a thriving paddle hub, built using upcycled and recycled materials. It’s now the home of our guided Katakanu tours, paddleboarding lessons, and the adrenaline-fueled Dragonboard races.
One of the events I’m most proud of is our annual Race the Dragon, where teams of five compete on our 7m multi-rider Dragonboards, with winners taking home a hand-carved wooden dragon trophy. But it’s not just about competition—giving back to the community has always been a priority.
Over the years, we’ve worked hard to support local charities, using our love for paddling to make a real difference. From organising inclusive paddling sessions for individuals from all walks of life, to hosting large-scale fundraising events, we believe that the water should be a place of joy and connection for everyone. That’s why we created The Big Avon Paddle, an annual charity event that has raised significant funds for causes like Dorothy House Hospice and Keynsham and District Mencap Society.
Expanding into River Cruises
In 2024, we took to the water in a new way, launching our river boat cruises. The response was incredible, and by 2025, we introduced our Wedding Boat service, offering couples a unique and picturesque way to travel to their ceremony. There’s nothing quite like gliding along the river on your wedding day—it’s an experience like no other.
Looking Ahead
What started as a simple kayak business has evolved into something far greater than I ever imagined. CK SUP & Paddle is now a place where people of all skill levels can come together to explore, compete, and celebrate on the water. Whether you’re racing on a Dragonboard, paddling peacefully along the river, participating in a fundraiser, or arriving in style on your wedding day, my team and I are here to make it an experience you’ll never forget.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds—because the best adventures are always just around the bend.
Byron.
